Google AI Overviews: What local businesses need to know now

In 2026, fewer than one in three Google searches still sends a click — yet local businesses are barely affected so far. What AI Overviews mean for your business, which numbers actually hold up and what to do now.

Google has rebuilt search. Since March 2025, "AI Overviews" have been rolling out across the EU — Cyprus included — appearing directly above the classic search results. AI-generated summaries that answer your question before you've clicked a single link.

For website owners that sounds threatening. And partly it is. But the reality is more nuanced — especially if you run a local business.

~25% of all Google searches now return an AI Overview (US keyword studies, 2026)
−58% average click-through rate on the top result when an AI Overview appears (Ahrefs)
68% of Google searches now end without a click to a website (SparkToro, 2026)

What are AI Overviews — and why now?

AI Overviews are built on Google's Gemini model. Google interprets your query, pulls relevant content from its index, has the AI generate a summary and links sources as evidence. In 78.6% of cases the result sits right at the top — above the first organic hit.

Since May 2025, practically every user in the EU sees these AI summaries. And since October 2025 there's "AI Mode" — a dedicated conversational tab where users can chat with Google, almost like with ChatGPT.

Timeline: AI Overviews in the EU
  • May 2024: launch in the US under the name "AI Overviews" (previously SGE)
  • October 2024: rollout to over 100 countries (most of the EU not yet included)
  • 26 March 2025: official EU rollout begins — initially only for signed-in users aged 18+
  • May 2025 (Google I/O): expansion to 200+ countries and 1.5bn users — signed-out users across the EU see AI Overviews too
  • 7 October 2025: AI Mode arrives in the EU — the conversational search tab
  • January 2026: seamless handover from AI Overview into AI Mode on mobile
  • May 2026 (Google I/O): Google reports AI Overviews reaching ~2.5bn monthly users and AI Mode passing 1bn
AI Mode vs AI Overview — what's the difference?

AI Overview is the AI summary that appears automatically for certain searches. You see it above the normal results — whether you want to or not.

AI Mode is a separate tab that users actively click into. There they can hold a dialogue with Google, ask follow-up questions and dig deeper into a topic. Google has hinted several times that AI Mode is meant to become the default search experience in the long run.

The numbers are drastic: 93% of AI Mode searches end without a single click on an external website.

Local search: why you're (still) lucky

Now for the surprisingly good news: local searches have so far been hit far less than everything else.

While AI Overviews now appear for roughly 15–25% of all searches in the large US keyword studies (Semrush, Conductor), current research puts the rate for purely local queries far lower. Whitespark found just 15% of transactional local searches trigger one. The reason: when someone searches "hairdresser Limassol" or "dentist near Limassol Marina", Google serves the trusted Local Pack with a map and listings. No AI summary needed.

But: as soon as a local search has an informational angle — "How much does a dental implant cost in Limassol?" or "best accountant for freelancers in Limassol" — AI Overviews appear far more often. Whitespark measured 92% AI Overview coverage for informational local queries and 97% for hybrid "research-then-book" ones; Local Falcon, across 60,000 queries in 20 countries, puts the overall trigger rate at around 40%.

The click losses in numbers

The most rigorous numbers so far come from the US, where the data is richest. In July 2025 Pew Research published a landmark behavioural study — 68,879 real searches from 900 people — measuring what users actually do when an AI Overview appears. There's no Cyprus-specific dataset yet, but it's the same Google and the same AI Overviews, so treat the direction as highly transferable:

What users did (Pew, US) Without AI Overview With AI Overview
Clicked a traditional search result 15% 8%
Ended the session on the results page 16% 26%
Clicked a link inside the AI summary 1%

Zoom out and the trend is unmistakable: SparkToro's 2026 clickstream analysis found 68% of US Google searches now end without any click at all — up from 60% in 2024, the fastest jump in a decade.

The losses vary enormously by sector, though — and the shape is remarkably consistent across studies:

Industry Click loss from AI Overviews
Recipe sites −1.1%
News & media −7.4%
Family & baby −15 to −24%
Home & garden −15 to −24%
Health portals −30% and more

Google's counter-argument is interesting: in the US, AI Overviews supposedly led to 10% more searches, and the remaining clicks are "higher quality". That may be true — but the numbers aren't independently verified, and what counts for website owners in the end is actual traffic.

Your Google Business Profile now matters more than your website

This may be the most important finding across all the studies: AI Overviews and AI Mode use your Google Business Profile as the primary data source for local information.

Google quotes verbatim from your GBP description and from customer reviews. Phrases like "Known for fast emergency repairs" are extracted straight from reviews and surfaced in the AI answer. Clicks on your business name in the AI answer lead to your GBP — not to your website.

And yet the basics are still widely neglected: BrightLocal's data shows only around 35% of small businesses even have a Google Business Profile, and complete profiles pull in roughly 7× more clicks than half-finished ones. From the profiles we see in Cyprus, plenty of good local businesses are leaving that lever untouched — it's the biggest quick win out there right now.

Action plan

7 things to do now

  1. 1
Rewrite your GBP description Instead of "We offer professional services", get specific: "We handle divorce, custody and adoption cases in Limassol." The AI quotes specific phrasing.
  2. 2
Choose categories precisely Don't stop at the primary category — maintain every relevant secondary category too. "Plumber" alone isn't enough — add "heating installation", "bathroom renovation", "emergency plumbing".
  3. 3
Actively encourage reviews Ask customers to mention the service and the location. Reply to every review within 7 days — positive ones too. Google scores your response rate.
  4. 4
Implement schema markup LocalBusiness schema with geo-coordinates, opening hours and services. Plus FAQPage schema on service pages — AI platforms actively extract from FAQ blocks.
  5. 5
Create dedicated service pages One page per service, not everything on a single overview page. According to BrightLocal, the strongest organic ranking factor for local SEO in 2025/2026.
  6. 6
Build "citable blocks" into your content Short, precise sections with concrete answers, numbers and local context. Self-contained passages of roughly 130–170 words that fully answer one question get cited more often — the evidence is mixed, so write for clarity, not for a formula.
  7. 7
Check your NAP consistency Name, address, phone number identical everywhere: GBP, website, Apple Maps, Bing Places, directories. Inconsistencies trigger algorithmic downgrades.

GEO: the new SEO discipline

Alongside classic SEO, a new discipline is emerging: GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation. The goal: not just ranking on Google, but being cited as a source by AI systems.

The reassuring news: GEO and SEO aren't opposites. An analysis by seoClarity shows that 94% of AI Overviews cite at least one source from the organic top 20 — and 90% from the top 10. If you already rank well, you start ahead in the AI context too.

But there are differences. These six principles form the core of GEO:

  1. Entities instead of keywords: name your brand, location, services and experts consistently and machine-readably.
  2. Question-and-answer structure: build content modularly so individual sections are citable.
  3. Topical depth: better to cover one topic completely than ten superficially.
  4. Off-page presence: mentions on platforms LLMs favour — Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, industry publications.
  5. Reviews as content: well-written reviews get quoted verbatim by the AI.
  6. Original data: your own studies, case examples, first-person experience — pure aggregation is something the AI does itself.

E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness — becomes the deciding factor here. The AI favours sources that show real experience: your own photos, local case studies, real author profiles with credentials. Obviously AI-generated images or generic text without recognisable expertise get marked down.

Ads in AI Overviews: what's coming to Europe

Google already shows ads inside AI Overviews in the US and eleven other countries — text and shopping ads from existing campaigns. In the EU — Cyprus included — these ads haven't launched yet. For now, ads only appear above and below the AI summaries.

But the European rollout is expected. If you want to be ready:

  • Performance Max campaigns with a clean product feed
  • High-quality landing pages clearly matched to the search query
  • Structured data on the target pages

Eligibility for AI Overview ads requires both query relevance and contextual fit with the generated answer. Sensitive sectors — health, finance, gambling — are excluded as a rule.

Monitoring: how to measure your AI visibility

One big problem: Google Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview clicks from normal organic clicks. So you can't directly see how much traffic AI Overviews are winning or losing you.

There are workarounds:

Tool What it does Price
SISTRIX AI Overviews filter, citation overview From €99/mo
Semrush / Ahrefs Flags keywords that trigger AI Overviews From around €100/mo
Peec AI, Otterly.AI Prompt monitoring: is your brand named in AI answers? Varies
Manual testing Check your top 20 keywords weekly in a clean browser profile Free

Alongside classic rankings, keep an eye on these new KPIs:

  • Share of voice in AI answers: how often is your business cited in AI Overviews?
  • Brand mention frequency: how often are you mentioned on platforms LLMs use as sources?
  • GBP actions: calls, direction requests and website clicks from the business panel — these metrics are gaining weight because many users convert straight from the GBP.

Opt out? Practically impossible

Many site owners ask: "Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?" The honest answer: no — not without massive collateral damage.

  • Google-Extended (robots.txt): only blocks AI training, not use in AI Overviews
  • nosnippet: prevents AI Overviews — but also all normal snippets and featured snippets
  • Full robots.txt block: then you're out of normal Google search too

Leaked internal Google documents from the US antitrust case show that Google deliberately rejected the option of a granular AI Overview opt-out. That changed under regulatory pressure: on 3 June 2026 the UK's Competition and Markets Authority ordered Google to give publishers effective tools to stop their content being used to power AI Overviews and other AI features. Google has nine months to implement the controls, with the most important parts due sooner — the first real opt-out anywhere, even if it's UK-only for now.

Legal developments around AI Overviews

Chegg was the first company to sue Google over AI Overview traffic losses (February 2025). Penske Media (Rolling Stone, Variety) filed the first major publisher lawsuit — with documented affiliate revenue drops of over 30%. Both cases are still pending in the US, where the court declined oral argument in May 2026.

Regulators are moving faster than the courts: the UK CMA's June 2026 publisher opt-out is the first binding control of its kind, and the EU AI Act's transparency rules on training data strengthen content creators' hand in negotiations.

More than 50 copyright lawsuits against AI companies are pending worldwide. The legal landscape is in motion — but nobody should bet on short-term change.

Hallucinations: when the AI talks nonsense about your business

Hallucinations are not a fringe problem. Google's AI Overview has already presented an April Fools' satire as fact and recommended putting glue on pizza. For local businesses the risk is real: wrong opening hours, mixed-up locations or invented service descriptions can cost you revenue directly.

67% of consumers don't check AI-generated answers against other sources. All the more important: your data on Google Business Profile, your website and in directories must be consistent and up to date — because that's exactly where the AI gets its information.

The bottom line: don't panic — but do act

AI Overviews change the rules of the game. But they don't break everything — especially not for local businesses in Cyprus that do their homework.

The key takeaways:

  • Local searches are barely affected so far. Under 10% of local keywords trigger an AI Overview in the most comprehensive EU data.
  • Your Google Business Profile matters more than your website in 2026. The AI uses it as its main source.
  • Reviews are the new ranking content. Google quotes review phrasing verbatim.
  • 97% of all AI Overview citations come from the top 20. Classic SEO remains the foundation.
  • GEO complements SEO — it doesn't replace it. Entity clarity, citable content and E-E-A-T become differentiators.
  • AI Mode is the real future. A 93% zero-click rate. Invest in brand mentions and content authority and you're building the foundation for the era after the "10 blue links".
